Since 2005, Honor Flight has proudly given more than 222,000 veterans the recognition and gratitude they’ve earned through trips to visit Washington D.C.’s iconic war memorials. These journeys offer heartfelt closure, camaraderie, and a chance for reflection and healing.
At StoryPoint Group communities, residents are celebrated as family—especially those who’ve bravely served their country. As part of StoryPoint’s ongoing Veterans History Project, handmade replicas of military vehicles are gifted to veteran residents to commemorate their service.
StoryPoint partnered with Honor Flight Dayton to send four extraordinary residents—three Navy veterans and one Army veteran—from Troy, Ohio to our nation’s capital. The StoryPoint community quickly realized this was more than just a trip; it was an unforgettable experience worth sharing.
Inspired by the residents’ incredible stories, StoryPoint reached out to SSDM to bring this powerful event to life through compelling visual storytelling. Our team jumped in immediately, setting plans into motion to ensure this unique event was documented with creativity, precision, and genuine human warmth.
SSDM approached the project with deep sensitivity and creativity. Our team began with pre-production planning, working alongside StoryPoint Group and Honor Flight Dayton to outline logistics and secure access to memorials and flight events. We interviewed each veteran in advance, developed storyboards based on their histories, and built a visual plan for the day of filming.
Production day began at sunrise in D.C., capturing the veterans’ emotional arrival at Reagan National Airport, followed by stops at war memorials and historic landmarks. That evening, the crew filmed the return home to Dayton, where cheering crowds welcomed the veterans back.
Post-production took place in Troy, Ohio, with in-depth interviews adding depth and personal perspective to the footage. SSDM edited the materials into a documentary-style piece suitable for wide distribution — and recognition.
This project had multiple goals:
To capture an unforgettable experience
Honored for their service
On the eve of the Honor Flight, the crew touched down in Washington D.C., prepared to film a once-in-a-lifetime tribute.
Bright and early, cameras rolled as four remarkable veterans—Don, Julia, Richard, and Vickie—arrived to a wave of heartfelt applause at Reagan National Airport. Throughout the day, the team documented every smile, tear, salute, and moment of reflection as the veterans visited memorials built in their honor.
That same evening, back in Dayton, filming continued as an enthusiastic crowd welcomed the heroes home with an emotional ceremony filled with gratitude and pride.
Pulling off a video shoot spanning two cities, multiple crews, and countless logistics within 24 hours required intense coordination, careful planning, and a unified production team at the helm.
From managing crew logistics at Dayton International and Reagan National airports to storyboarding and scripting personal veteran narratives, the team ensured each moving part was in sync. Highlights included:
Crew coordination at both Dayton and Reagan National airports
Overseeing multiple production teams across Washington D.C.
Storyboarding and scripting to showcase each veteran’s personal journey
Organizing post-event interviews at StoryPoint
Sourcing and compiling biographical and historical footage
Managing all travel arrangements for veterans, crew, and equipment
Every detail was thoughtfully executed, allowing for an authentic and seamless capture of these powerful moments.
Back in Troy, interviews were conducted with each veteran, allowing them to share their reflections firsthand. These heartfelt conversations became the emotional center of the documentary.
After reviewing hours of footage, the team curated a compelling narrative that honored their experiences and sacrifices. The final video was carefully crafted for maximum emotional impact, with alternate versions created to suit various platforms and audiences.
Collaborating closely with StoryPoint residents reminded the team why this work matters. Every project has a human heartbeat—and this one pulsed with courage, humility, and gratitude. It was a privilege to share stories, exchange laughter and tears, and witness these veterans receive the recognition they so deeply deserve.
SSDM is deeply proud to have been entrusted with bringing these inspiring stories to life. It’s projects like these—full of emotion, connection, and meaning—that remind us why storytelling matters.
Receiving a Telly Award for this documentary was wonderful, but the true honor was celebrating and preserving the powerful legacies of these four remarkable individuals from StoryPoint.
